    I don't have a lot of space as I live in an apartment with two others. However, having the same goal of sustainability helps us plan our space. We have a small planter where we can grow herbs. It's not a lot, but it's a start! Even a small plot with ONE type of herb or produce can help you take control of your carbon footprint and diet.

    How does food sovereignty address the complex transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems?

    It's unfair for someone on the coast to determine the diet and agricultural methods of someone living in the desert. Only the people living in the community know what needs to be done to support their diet. If we support food sovereignty, people will be able to take on more responsibility for their food and body. This type of independence allows community members to flourish and create a stronger bond with their neighbors.

    There is no environmental justice without the acknowledgment of environmental racism. What communities live near factories? Agricultural fields? What are the social and racial factors that influence environmental racism? Kids of color and who live in under-resourced communities tend to have more pollution in their air and lungs. This affects their neurology and how well they do in school. Which can affect their future outcome!! Everything is connected.

    Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

    Many people will act as if sustainability is new. That is obviously not the case. When thinking about ways to rebalance the give and take relationship between us and our environment, we need to listen to our Native communities! We shouldn't work towards never eating meat. That isn't being realistic and excluding many communities that either 1) don't have the same resources as us or 2) cultural relationships with their food. The goal should be minimizing the exploitation of resources than an outright ban of them.

    Restorative justice focuses on healing and forgiveness! That changes the way we view crime and being hurt by others. I think it can elevate social and environmental justice efforts by putting the responsibility on both participants!

    It's important to put yourself on the back burner during important conversations - especially ones that you want to learn from. It's easy to try and add personal experiences, but if the collaborative conversation is not the point, then you must become a listener rather than a participant.

    I drive to work since I don't have a bike, but for everything else I try to walk so as to decrease my carbon footprint!

    I try to keep my meals plant based as much as possible, but the EcoChallenge has made me turn it into a mission! I got some faux Turkey to use for sandwiches and I want to try vegan mayo next!

    I make it a point to keep 5 reusable bags in my car so I never have to buy the plastic ones. Keeping them in my car help me remember to use them!

    Yesterday I used a to go container I had gotten from a pho place to pack up some chicken tortilla soup! I didn't realize I was doing my part until my friend pointed it out to me. It's something my mom has always done so I never realized I was helping the environment from the start!
