Halloween is almost here, so make sure your pumpkins don't end up in landfills once the holiday passes! Either compost your pumpkin remains or donate them to local animal sanctuaries. Pumpkins that haven't been painted or decorated can often be used as enrichment for animals, so many animal sanctuaries take pumpkin donations!

Not necessarily for my neighborhood, but I was invited to join a small sustainability group for a skincare company that I love (but doesn't offer plastic free packaging) where customers are able to answer their questions and provide feedback on the changes we would like to see. It has been great to be able to give my input and help make changes within a large company! Changing some of their packaging would make a HUGE difference since they have such a large customer base.

How might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems differently?

Since our apartment complex already has a recycling program, I am advocating for ways to improve and expand that program. We made a printable chart to reference when trying to determine whether we can recycle items or if they have to be trashed. I made flyers to put up around our neighborhood that link to the chart to help educate others so that hopefully we can reduce the amount of contaminated recycling in our community. I often see plastic bags in the recycling, so I am hoping that this makes a difference! I will see if there are more ways to advocate for better recycling methods in our neighborhood.

Tim and I just spent the night making a chart of what can be recycled curbside in Raleigh along with what needs to be dropped off at stores, trashed, and composted. We made it to print off and keep on hand to know what specific items we can recycle in our area. Then I realized that a lot of people might benefit from this, so I made a flyer with a QR code linking to our Google doc and I'm going to put it up at the mailbox areas around our apartment complex! Hopefully this can help some other people. Even if one person starts properly recycling because of this, it will make a huge difference!

I need to do some additional research on what our recycling company actually recycles....the condo association sometimes puts a blurb about it in our emailed updates but they never mention that they take glass or aluminum cans...I am sure they do but maybe they just assume that everyone knows that since we all put them in the recycling - they may be concentrating on sharing information about the questionable items but, honestly, they should provide all the people who live here with a complete list so there is no question about it. The think I hate is that some people don't break down their cardboard boxes which causes the recycling bins to be full really quickly - I think I will send an email to the office and ask them to include a note in the next communication email that people should breakdown/fold down their boxes to ensure all the recycling can fit into the bin...I've seen people take recycling out but then end up throwing it in the dumpster since the bins are full.

Quick update on my attempt to stop junk mail: This was the first week that we didn't receive our weekly newspaper! So glad that I looked into it and finally cancelled it. Since we never actually signed up for it, we wouldn't have even known that we could cancel it if it weren't for this challenge.
