"During our dangerously smoky days I learned first-hand just how terrible it would be to live in a post-apocalyptic sci fi world - "After we destroyed the Earth's atmosphere, we were forced to live inside, only venturing out with protective masks." I'm not ready for that world."

I've finally started to achieve my "Limit Social Media" goal.  However, I may have simply replaced it with a different vice as I'm now spending equal minutes playing Civ on my tablet.  Hmmm.  For me the goal was about disengaging with content that has a negative impact on my mental state so I am still calling this a win.

How do you practice self care?

    Bex! S's avatar
    Bex! S 10/13/2020 7:47 AM
Investing in my health by sourcing quality, local foods.  Giving back and supporting others with my time, money, words, and actions.  Getting outside often.  Being active always.  Managing negative mental self talk.  Treating myself with grace.

This is a great opportunity to choose actions that also support my mental health care - disengaging form social media, spending time outside, spending quiet time, focusing on hobbies (cooking).  Are you ready for winter in a pandemic?  Now is definitely the time to cultivate habits that sustain your clam and happiness.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Try a New Way to Prep
Canning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA or another trusted source. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?

    Bex! S 10/12/2020 8:32 AM
Everything!  Pickles are my new jam this year.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Limit Social Media
Social media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also take more time than we realize or intend to give. After doing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?

    Bex! S 10/08/2020 10:06 AM
I'm failing at this so far.  While Facebook is not good for my mental/emotional health, it's a hard habit to break.  And I do wonder whether the self-control points I'm trying to spend on that behavior could be better spent elsewhere?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Bex! S's avatar
    Bex! S 10/07/2020 8:29 AM
I think we often see meat as a short cut.  A quick way to create the central focus of a meal, to add protein or flavor.  In the US, we do this a lot with cheese as well.  Returning to the US after living in a country with very low dairy consumption, I remembering being both surprised and annoyed at how many restaurant dishes were topped with cheese, as if they couldn't figure out any other ways to impart flavor and richness.

Can't talk now.  Gotta spend 5 minutes outside in nature.  Turns out interreacting with a digital platform is somewhat incompatible with a slow down and connect with the world goal.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Power Down the Computer
What are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?

    Bex! S's avatar
    Bex! S 10/07/2020 8:10 AM
Sure, I can turn off lights when I leave a room, figure out what I want before opening the refrigerator, plug my TV into a power strip we turn off when we're not watching.  But unless we focus on holding corporate polluters accountable and on driving structural changes that positively impact the environment, my pissing in the ocean is better for my mental health (at least I'm doing something) than the planet's health.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Healing and Renewal Go for a Daily Walk Outside
Fresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?

    Bex! S's avatar
    Bex! S 10/02/2020 10:54 AM
Being outside in fresh air always improves my mood, making me feel calmer and happier.  Even just standing on the porch step for a few minutes.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Healing and Renewal Practice Gratitude for Earth
Kathleen Dean Moore says that a sense of gratitude leads to a sense of moral obligation. Do you agree? How can we cultivate a sense of gratitude as individuals, and as a society?

    Bex! S's avatar
    Bex! S 10/02/2020 10:53 AM
I disagree.  Gratitude and thankfulness seem far from obligation and duty to me.  Two ways to cultivate gratitude include taking note of the good things in your life and recognizing those things as blessings.
