My husband and I usually walk daily at Hidden Lake near our home.  Today, Sunday, although time was tight, we went to the forest preserve in Wheaton and Hiked for over an hour at Herrick Lake.  Although it put me behind on all of the things I needed to get done today, it was refreshing and fun to enjoy new scenery and actually bump into some old friends along the way!

I selected two eco-challenges.  (1) - Nature:  I usually walk daily however, tend to go to the same area each day.  I will look for a new path and still be able to enjoy the environment, get exercise and clear my thoughts; however, I will take a different route, experience new surroundings, and enrich this activity by learning about the many different options around me!  (2) - Justice for the community: I confess I am not much of a book reader, so I see this challenge as a double benefit...force me to read a book from cover to cover and to read about a topic that I would never have previously explored.

I have enjoyed being a part of the NVECO club at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville, Illinois for the past couple of years.  So, I was happy to join their team!  Although I have always been enthusiastic about the environment, camping, fishing and the out of doors, I really became more invested when I worked on my Kane County Naturalist (KCCN) Certification.  I became certified in 2016 and have recertified each year since.

I enjoy volunteering for eco-environmental events in Kane County through their park districts as well as the Kane County  Forest Preserve.  To recertify, we are required to complete 30 hours of additional learning each year through the KCCN "learning for experts" programs covering a wide variety of topics.  I enjoy learning when I can apply the knowledge and experiences to my summer jobs as a Girl Scout camp director and also as a Science Camp Instructor at the Morton Arboretum.

I look forward to participating in this on-line program - learning, sharing and becoming more invested in the ways I can help the world around me....from environmental initiatives to social justice awareness.
