I failed on my one time action, but I pledge to do it outside the ecochallenge timeline!

Need vs. want tip: grocery shop with a list!!!!  Also, I only buy meat/fish/chicken on sale (preferably reduced for quick sale - for immediate use, or straight to the freezer). Reduces our food production footprint, healthier & saves $$.

We consider to carefully measure the need / want to replace a toaster over.  Our 20 year old model finally died completely (was almost dead for months...). Have been trying to find one used  - now trying to decide if we bite the bullet and buy new.

I failed on mindful eating - but I did so to read an article about how the second hand clothing market is gaining ground during COVID. I cheated, but in the name of the (greener) circular economy!

Failing on need vs. want as we traveled and left critical tech at home. Will have to buy duplicates in order for student to be online for school. PREPARATION prevents purchases!!!!

Total failure today - texted my daughter while eating, impulse purchases and a long shower. Go big or go home! This is the half way mark. Will reset for the rest of the challenge!

5 minute showers made easy by limited reopening of public pools! I can now "book a lane" to enjoy a socially distant lap swim. Showing afterward in a minimalist, drafty, locker room is no treat. I am down to 3 minutes - shampoo, conditioner, soap & out!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Eat Mindfully
Mindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?

When I am preparing food to eat mindfully, I spend more time putting the meal together. When it is fully assembled I take a moment to survey my work before tucking in!
Hopping up and down from my plate distracts from mindful consumption.

Need Vs. Want is so hard!!!!! Could not stay away from Cabi (virtual / socially distanced) shopping event hosted by fellow KEENers this weekend....don't NEED new clothes.  However, Saturday I found a stool to perfectly fit my Mom's bar height kitchen eating area at GoodWill bins. Satisfied her need with a pre-loved $5 solution - easy on the planet and the wallet!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Needs Vs. Wants
How is creativity a necessary ingredient for practicing simplicity?

Creative solutions allow you to do more with less. You may think you need to replace like with like, but sometimes "almost like" can do the job! Creative problem solvers can find new uses for old things - or find multiple uses for an item, increasing it's utility value.
