REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole Community Support Businesses Owned by People of ColorA recent Keen Independent Research Foundation study found that Minority Businesses Enterprises (MBEs) are more likely to have difficulties in receiving loans or city contracts. In what ways can you work to address systemic racism like that demonstrated in this study?
Mary Chipman 10/18/2020 7:33 PMI can find out what banks in our area are supportive of black businesses and see how my bank stacks up. If they are not among the best supporters, then I can change banks. -
Mary Chipman 10/08/2020 5:50 AMThis has already been an eye-opening project. Just watching the films "13th" and "The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson" taught me more about the daily struggles of black people and the trans community than I thought possible. I had not realized the extent of threats to their lives, and I felt disgusted that this goes on. Disgusted and motivated to participate for change. I intend to join the local "Black Lives Matter" movement and to research how I can help the trans community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole Community Watch a Documentary about Racial InjusticeWhat did you learn about racial injustice in the documentary(ies) you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of sustainability?
Mary Chipman 10/07/2020 10:46 PMI learned that we are still enslaving black people, we are just doing it differently now by forcing them to work while in prison. -
Mary Chipman 10/07/2020 10:43 PMToday I watched the documentary "The Life and Death of Marsha P. Johnson. This film broke my heart. A world-famous activist in the trans world is found floating dead in the Hudson River, and years later a victim advocate tries to get some answers before leaving her job. But there are no answers. Officials aren't helpful, they claim to have records unavailable, and even though Marsha still has many friends who mourn her, they understand all too well the violence inflicted on trans women especially. They are so often murdered and nothing is done about it. This film opened my eyes to a problem that I didn't know existed. I will look for opportunities to use this awareness to help people who aren't hurting anyone - they are just being themselves. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole Community Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?
Mary Chipman 10/07/2020 5:06 PMI have a lot of plastic bags from various stores. It's not that I don't have canvas shopping bags, it's that I forget to use them. I did buy boxed water today instead of plastic bottled water. If I would just remember my canvas bags, I wouldn't use that many plastic bags.
