Waste

Skip the Straw

Do at Home

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 5 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

I really have normalized not using a straw. It is so simple, just don't use one.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

well, I am always down for the challenge. I could have easily got a bag for my things, but as a work out I carried everything out by hand, and that includes 3 milk cartons. Other than that, if you are not by yourself and you in the circumstance of wanting to save yourself from using plastic bags, use each other. Me and my brother always team up this way.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

By completely avoiding the straw. Normally when I order drinks with a lid, I say "no lid and no straw" or at starbucks we have sip-able lids that are easy to avoid straws.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

I personally feel it is easy to bring a reusable water bottle everywhere you go, you just gotta remember that you need to stay hydrated and by buying plastic bottles not only are you wasting money but polluting the earth with unnecessary plastic.

Working at Starbucks makes me realize how many straws go to waste, so anytime I purchase a drink or whatnot I avoid the "straw" at all costs.

It is hard to avoid using bags at the store, especially when you have a lot of groceries, but like what my family and I do is purchase reusable bags, or we team up and carry our groceries out! Easier than that, grocery stores have carts!

I got a cold today, but I am hoping to push through the pain and continue to make a difference one action at a time.

I always keep my reusable water bottles near me, two specifically so I consume a good amount of water for myself in a day. I never buy water bottles from stores, nor do I ask for waters from drive-thrus, I simply carry my water bottles around with me:)
