Madi's actions

Community

Volunteer at a soup kitchen

My goal is to help my community and help those in need by serving them hot food and dessert. I also helped out with the cleaning afterwards. I chose this goal because it was something I always wanted to do.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health

Know My Health

I will get my Core Four Biometrics tests (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and BMI).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Healing and Renewal

Engage In Active Listening

Do at Home

I will practice actively listening to a friend, family member, co-worker, acquaintance, or someone who I may disagree with in at least 3 conversations.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Transportation

Carpooling

I carpooled with my friends to an area where each of us had to go to a different store. Instead of everyone driving themselves we all got together and figured out a time and the most efficient way to complete this. I chose it because it is pointless to have 4 cars going in the same direction when we can all just take 1 car and reduce emissions.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community

Research Voter Suppression

Do at Home

I will spend at least 60 minutes finding out what local laws, policies, and practices keep people from voting in my community.

COMPLETED

I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Know My Health
How do you deal with the physical and emotional stress of the big problems we face? How can you help others cope?

    Madi Dobson's avatar

I have to get my vitals checked everyday. Doing this helps me know the state of my physical health and allows me to put any health issues first. I would suggest other people take note of there mental and physical health everyday and track any changes.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Healing and Renewal Engage In Active Listening
What was it like to actively listen to someone? How did both people and the conversation(s) benefit from active listening?

    Madi Dobson's avatar
    Madi Dobson 10/12/2020 7:11 AM
Active listening is kind go challenging. It is hard to have a conversation with people knowing your views don't match up and not starting an argument. Some benefits are that you are able to get to know the other person better and you hear about views that you might not have learned about on your own
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community Research Voter Suppression
What are the ways in which voters are prohibited from or discouraged from voting in your region and/or state? What could be done to get rid of these barriers?

    Madi Dobson's avatar
    Madi Dobson 10/10/2020 11:40 AM
In my area people are strongly discouraged to vote using mail in ballots. A lot of the mail drop off boxes are only open and available during certain hours of the day which makes it very hard for students to find time around their classes or for working adults to find time before or after their shift
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

    Madi Dobson's avatar
    Madi Dobson 10/07/2020 9:10 PM
I really don't have any trouble with using a reusable mug. I don't buy single use coffee mugs because I know there is no use for them as long as I have my reusable one
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

    Madi Dobson 10/07/2020 9:08 PM
Sometimes I forget my reusable water bottle or I don't have a place I can refill my reusable water bottle while out in public. I need to make it daily habit of making sure I have my phones, keys, mask, AND water bottle. And if I know I will be out for a long period of time I could bring an extra water bottle
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Madi Dobson's avatar
    Madi Dobson 10/07/2020 9:06 PM
People in richer countries eat more meat because they have the right machines to make sure the meat is processed and cleaned properly.  The factorization of meat production is terrible for the environment. More meat=more toxic emissions
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Nature Go for a Daily Walk
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

    Madi Dobson's avatar
    Madi Dobson 10/07/2020 1:56 PM
I went for a run today because of the weather and it was really nice out and I enjoyed being outside with no destination in particular
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?

    Madi Dobson's avatar
    Madi Dobson 10/07/2020 8:30 AM
I would make sure that everything I bought is something that I could carry out in my hands and place it in my car in a way that will spill everywhere. If I can't do that I would buy a reusable bag that the store I am at has on sale. IF none of those options are available I would ask the store if they have an empty cardboard box I could put my items in
