  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Buy From a Farmers Market
What is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?

    Shannon Eggers's avatar
    Shannon Eggers 10/22/2020 6:49 PM
I could buy locally more often. As my daughter said... it costs more to buy sustainable food; if more people who could afford it do so, then we could make a big impact.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?

    Shannon Eggers's avatar
    Shannon Eggers 10/22/2020 6:48 PM
The outdoors is my happy space. It brings a sense of purpose, understanding, joy, and contentment. I am grateful to live next to a large prairie ecosystem... with fabulous sunsets and sunrises... and across the street from a trail that provides a welcome break from running along roads.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smart Seafood Choices
Many states and countries have advisories on eating fish. Find out what is advised for your region. Do you think your diet choices fall within these guidelines? What steps do you need to take to make sure that they do?

    Shannon Eggers's avatar
    Shannon Eggers 10/22/2020 6:46 PM
My daughter recently proclaimed (prior to the start of this challenge) that she wanted to stop eating seafood because she heard the world's seafood supply would be gone within 10 years (or so). This challenge has provided information I could share with her on how we can make smart, sustainable seafood choices. Florida has phenomenal seafood options, thankfully. We follow all local and state guidelines.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Online Energy Audit
What most interested or surprised you about your own energy footprint? What changes did you make or will you make?

    Shannon Eggers's avatar
    Shannon Eggers 10/22/2020 6:42 PM
I was not terribly surprised by the audit. I did add double cellular shades to my east facing windows. They made an enormous impact on cooling down the room in sunny Florida!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community Watch a Documentary about Racial Injustice
What did you learn about racial injustice in the documentary(ies) you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of sustainability?

    Shannon Eggers's avatar
    Shannon Eggers 10/22/2020 6:41 PM
Whew. I have watched many documentaries and shows on racial injustice lately. Probably the largest impact was from watching '13th' and the recognition that we as a country have perpetuated racial inequities within our justice system. Our justice system is a system built on top of slavery and made worse by Clinton (and earlier presidents) with justice 'reforms'. There is no reason that the US should have the largest population of inmates in the world unless it is for the prison contractors and prison construction firms to profit. It is impossible to sustain from both a social justice and environmental impact. We have built a conglomerate that does not serve its intended purpose. There is a smart way to reform and 'right-size' the system.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
Who is most affected by environmental degradation and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?

    Shannon Eggers's avatar
    Shannon Eggers 10/22/2020 6:34 PM
I admit I am new to environmental justice and food sovereignty. While my community is better off than others (at least from what I have read), there are still many inequities in my community with regards to underprivileged and underrepresented people. Part of it is education and instilling the knowledge that there are other choices with regards to food. Part of it is ensuring the lower income areas receive equitable assistance.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Healing and Renewal Engage In Active Listening
What was it like to actively listen to someone? How did both people and the conversation(s) benefit from active listening?

    Shannon Eggers's avatar
    Shannon Eggers 10/22/2020 6:26 PM
Active listening is a skill. It is an especially important skill in crucial conversations or speaking with a teenager. Understanding the perspective of the other person and not just focusing on our own needs, wants, or expectations is necessary to have real communications. So often people get tied up in their own 'selfishness' that they forget to actually listen.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Healing and Renewal Joyful Movement
What's your favorite activity(ies) in which you experience joy while being active and moving?

    Shannon Eggers's avatar
    Shannon Eggers 10/22/2020 6:23 PM
Dancing! Dancing by myself, with a partner, or with a group fitness class always brings joy to my life!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Healing and Renewal Happiness
How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

    Shannon Eggers's avatar
    Shannon Eggers 10/22/2020 6:22 PM
Change your thoughts, change your life. Practicing gratitude brings positivity and grace into your life and it keeps you grounded in all the good things life has to offer.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community Learn More about Food Apartheid
What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?

    Shannon Eggers's avatar
    Shannon Eggers 10/20/2020 5:50 AM
The article on food apartheid and video on food sovereignty gave me a new understanding of the challenges faced with underrepresented and indigenous communities. Cheaper, faster, easier wins out over more nutritious options... big corporations controlling food sources and the fast food industry push to ensure that they continue to make money. Bringing locally sourced food back to communities requires fundamental changes, starting with education.
