Do at Home
I will watch 3 documentary(ies) about systemic racism.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Do at Home
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate. I will keep 2 container(s) out of the landfill each day.

Reduce Animal Products
Do at Home
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Food
Whole Foods Diet

I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 1 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Action Track: Healing and Renewal
Healthy Sleep

Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
Do at Home
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus to reduce pollution in the environment and in local communities.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole CommunityWhat did you learn about racial injustice in the documentary(ies) you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of sustainability?
Elisa Garcia 10/28/2020 9:06 AMI've learnt that even if we continuously forger, during our day to day, that unfortunately racism is still there and very alive. The most outrageous situations are still happening and we all need to stand up and push for a change. I was aware of the Rodney King police abuse and the consequent disorders and complaints, but didn't know at all the story of Marsha. Really heartbreaking! Racial equality is critical to have a sustainable planet, as poverty is often linked to "minorities" and the key sustainability challenges are also impacting more the poorest people. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole CommunityWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?
Elisa Garcia 10/22/2020 10:03 AMOur family has stopped using plastic straws (now use glass), we all use reusable bottles for water, don't use anymore paper napkins but cloth napkins, we are reusing plastic bags or using vegetable bags -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing and RenewalConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Elisa Garcia 10/22/2020 9:58 AMI was sleeping 6 to 6.5 hours and now I'm sleeping 7 hours and some days even a bit more during the week. I need to be consistent in having dinner earlier, so that I can also get to bed earlier. The key is to refrain from working late and it's not always easy to manage. Setting up an alarm clock that reminds me about the time is helping -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow does eating more fruits and vegetables and less meat positively affect yourself, other people, and our planet?
Elisa Garcia 10/22/2020 9:54 AMIt keeps us healthy, so that it helps as well the social sanitary system by reducing the expend in medical assistance. It also reduces a lot the water consumption, which is required to raise animals and later one clean the meat and helps to reduce deforestation, plus it reduces the level of methane gases that some animals produce -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodMichael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this assertion?
Elisa Garcia 10/22/2020 9:48 AMThis is spot on: an apple a day keeps the doctor away!
Consuming daily a considerable amount of fruits and vegetables or pulses will help us to strengthen our immune system and protect us from sicknesses -
Elisa Garcia 10/22/2020 9:42 AMI was very happy to hear that the butchers shop where I regularly buy meat is exploring alternatives to start using biodegradable packaging to 100% replace plastic. I've been having such conversations with them since I did the eco-challenge last year and it seems that I'm not the only one carrying glass containers and asking for no plastic packaging... -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Elisa Garcia 10/22/2020 9:39 AMThe fact that there's still so many people that doesn't realize the incredible amount of plastics rubbish that we generate and how hard it is sometimes to avoid using 1-use plastic containers. Covid-19 is not helping in these regards... -
Elisa Garcia 10/18/2020 7:07 AMThe increase of persons working from home is probably not helping here, as not every day you have the time to cook everything. When I have little time and have to reach to processed food, at least I'm trying to buy those that are packed on paper containers and have no additives, colorants and are also low in saturated fats and sugar. I think that the products from "La Sirena" are quite good in this sense and they're only using 100% biodegradable bags since a year or so. -
Elisa Garcia 10/18/2020 7:03 AMThe achievement of this goal is being relatively easy, after having become more conscious, together with all the family, when I joined last year's ecochallenge -
Elisa Garcia 10/18/2020 7:01 AMI'm really happy of having taken this goal, as it's helping to remember to eat more fruit, which I was forgetting often before.
