Prevent Recycling Contamination

Do at Home

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 15 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.

COMPLETED 14
DAILY ACTIONS

Community

Support Comerica's National Day of Service

As an extension to Comerica's National Day of Service in September, consider conducting a virtual volunteer action that supports our communities. Since there are no organized in-person river, beach or lake clean-ups in most communities this year, if you would like, you can consider cleaning up around your house and neighborhood to support your local environment as neighborhood storm drains commonly drain to local water bodies. Please do not invite others outside of your household if you choose this action.

Writing three things I am grateful for on the last day of the ecochallenge, I realized that one of the things for which I am grateful is the ecochallenge. I have been wanting to participate in this for over a year, and previously it seemed like something I could not commit to. I am so thankful for this experience and what I have learned along the way. It was totally manageable and worth it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community Watch a Documentary about Racial Injustice
What did you learn about racial injustice in the documentary(ies) you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of sustainability?

I watched The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson and learned that so often, people who are unique, or a minority, are treated differently. Marsha was part of a movement. She introduced new ideas and took others under her wing. She wasn't expendable. We need people like Marsha in our world no matter how uncomfortable it might make some people. They seek justice and drive change.

Practicing gratitude has made me want to treat and do things for others so that they are grateful. If this continues, those affected will continue to grow and grow.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Prevent Recycling Contamination
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

I've learned that I need to be more diligent about what I put in my recycle bin and that while general guidelines are nice, they don't always align with my specific hauler.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community Learn About Trans, Femme, and Nonbinary Experiences
How is equality for trans, femme, and nonbinary people important to a just and sustainable society?

I think all types of people need to feel safe and heard in order to contribute their most creative ideas. Trans, femme and nonbinary people have unique perspective, ideas and experiences to contribute, benefitting society as a whole. We do not benefit as a society if everyone is exactly the same. We benefit from our differences.
