Justin's actions
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
Do at Home
I will take a 20-minute walk outside each day.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
Do at Home
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Do at Home
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 60 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Water
5-Minute Showers
Do at Home
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Health
Eliminate Toxic Plastics
Do at Home
I will avoid buying toxic plastics - including polycarbonate, polystyrene and polyvinyl - and instead replace them with durable non-plastic options.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Justin Lenahansen 10/27/2020 10:34 AMReduce single use plastics. This issue sticks with me as single use plastics impact both local and global systems. As part of the eco challenge, I signed my household up for a program that collects plastics (films, bags, wrap), used clothing, light bulbs, and batteries and either recycles or sells those items back to manufacturers. As a result, we have reduced the amount of trash we create and we are reducing the size of our curbside trash bin. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Justin Lenahansen 10/27/2020 10:31 AMLike a good night sleep, daily walks are not only giving me an appreciation for my community; they are impacting other "eco" areas as well. When I take daily walks, I have more energy to do things around the house (for example, wash dishes by hand) which saves water and energy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Justin Lenahansen 10/27/2020 10:30 AMShifting my sleep patterns necessitates turning off electronics and getting in bed earlier (for me). I find that when I am well-rested, it impacts other "eco" areas as well (for example, I drink less coffee which means I am creating less waste and using less water). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Adjust the ThermostatYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your ZIP code, region, and/or state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Justin Lenahansen 10/27/2020 10:26 AMI can ask my utility company (in my case, Puget Sound Energy) to tell me about the average energy usage in Renton, WA. I can then compare that to my month-over-month usage. I also signed my household up for a program that invests monthly into clean energy programs. -
Justin Lenahansen 10/26/2020 4:37 PMMy people's ecochallenge is going well! Going through this process has helped me realize or remember all of the small actions that have some impact. -
Justin Lenahansen 10/08/2020 2:12 PMMy name is Justin and I like sustainability. Cheers!
