Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Kathleen Remlinger 10/28/2020 5:37 PMThe easier it is to do a task, the more likely people will participate, including for recycling. Maybe at Neuqua we could figure out a way to pool resources to recycle some of the more hard to recycle items such as styrofoam and bread tags. (Did not know the latter could be recycled until I say one of Gillian Schneider's posts). Would it work if once a month or every 2 months those interested in recycling brought their uncommon goods to Neuqua and we could rotate who would drop them at the different centers? Of course it is better to avoid styrofoam and chose reusable containers instead, but it doesn't always happen that way. -
Kathleen Remlinger 10/27/2020 7:31 PMBeing part of a challenge and a team is motivating. Will need to work on sustainability of my goals once the challenge draws to an end and I don't have to account to others. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing and Renewal Joyful MovementWhat's your favorite activity(ies) in which you experience joy while being active and moving?
Kathleen Remlinger 10/26/2020 6:46 PMFor the past 1 1/2 years, I have been using IFit with my treadmill. Some of the trainers not only coach you on your form, they delve into the culture of the places around the word in which they are training and share the information with us. Yesterday was a jog in the National Park around Mount Hood. The trainer spoke of the Japanese practice of forest bathing. Essentially one goes into the forest and listens to rushing of streams and the wind in the trees and takes in the scents of nature. It comforts and relaxes the person and gives joy. I think I will try doing more exercise in forest preserves and in parks (at least when the weather is agreeable) to get extra benefits. -
Kathleen Remlinger 10/25/2020 6:04 PMAlthough yesterday I was able to get in my minimum number of mindfulness minutes, there were plenty of times during the day when I fell flat. Even this morning my mindfulness was sub-optimal. This is an activity I will need to practice for months or longer after the end of our eco-challenge. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Sign Up to VoteWhy is voting important to creating a just, sustainable, and thriving world? In what other ways can you actively participate in important decision-making?
Kathleen Remlinger 10/23/2020 6:48 PMDifferent people have different primary values. Voting gives us a chance to choose leaders whose values align with ours. If a just, sustainable, thriving world is important to a person, then he or she should help shape that world by voting for politicians who are willing to put these values above immediate profit. -
Kathleen Remlinger 10/20/2020 7:16 PMMy son moved a few months ago so I texted to remind him to register to vote from his new location. He had already done so. Guess I should stop being such a helicopter mom, but when students are busy studying, maybe a reminder about an important subject such as voting isn't so bad. -
Kathleen Remlinger 10/18/2020 6:46 PMIt is interesting that in California the stores are allowing reusable bags (Divya Ranjith's post). Most of the stores in my area stopped that when original shelter-in-place went into effect. Some (e.g. Walmart) are not even accepting plastic bags for recycling at this time. Luckily my closest Jewel is. When I have a small to medium number of groceries, I am just putting them in the cart without bags and then am transferring the items to my car. It isn't difficult to do so I think I'll expand to doing this for all my groceries now. -
Kathleen Remlinger 10/16/2020 9:03 PMDid not do well today in mindfulness action. The only consolation is that often I have learned and been propelled forward more by failures than by successes. Determined to make tomorrow a more fruitful day. -
Kathleen Remlinger 10/15/2020 6:37 PMFor better or for worse, my motivations for joining the team and the actions are a bit egocentric. The concept of team is especially welcoming in this period of isolation. I chose daily mindfulness because so often my mind jumps to what has happened, will happen, or needs to be done, rather than appreciating the here and now. The action of decreasing meat consumption too is aimed at keeping healthy. -
Kathleen Remlinger 10/13/2020 6:59 PMAm carrying around my trash daily. My deepest apologies to anyone at school who might have detected a malodorous waft emanating from my backpack. It is all for a good cause.
