  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Engage In Active Listening
What was it like to actively listen to someone? How did both people and the conversation(s) benefit from active listening?

    Jamie Combes's avatar
    Jamie Combes 10/27/2020 7:27 AM
It's challenging to actively listen, especially if the topic is not one you are particularly interested in or find interesting. However, active listening allows the other to he heard and validated.

Food sovereignty address the complex transition from localized food systems to modern global food systems by making food more accessible to all.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
Where are your nearest natural bodies of water? How might they be affected by runoff?

    Jamie Combes's avatar
    Jamie Combes 10/26/2020 9:50 AM
Seneca River - just one block away! This area is particularly vulnerable to runoff from parking lots, businesses, and the US Postal Service office. All are located on the banks of the river.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Go Paperless
Reducing your paper mail can reduce mental clutter as well as physical waste -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?

    Jamie Combes's avatar
    Jamie Combes 10/26/2020 9:50 AM
I feel a bit of a weight lifted by cancelling magazines and unsubscribing to mailers. I wish I could reduce it even more!! I hate unsolicited mail!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

    Jamie Combes's avatar
    Jamie Combes 10/26/2020 9:48 AM
Being on the go a lot makes it a challenge to always use a re-usable cup. Also, many places that once would re-fill cups, now will not. When I choose a reusable cup over a one-time use cup, I feel good about my choice.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Tour a Waste Management Facility
Field trip! What a fun way to learn about our impact and consumption! What facility did you tour? What did you learn?

    Jamie Combes's avatar
    Jamie Combes 10/26/2020 9:47 AM
Oswego County dump! I learned that folks in our area have a lot of trash! The lines were long and the dump was short on space. It was eye-opening seeing how much "stuff" was put into the dump in the short amount of time we were there.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

    Jamie Combes's avatar
    Jamie Combes 10/26/2020 9:45 AM
I found our area is very limited in what can be recycled and where else you can take items to recycle. Due to the economic downturn of using recycled materials, our area has had to increase prices to accept recyclables separately from trash. I expect this will result in less recycling overall.
