Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Do at Home
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate. I will keep 3 container(s) out of the landfill each day.

Tracy Dana 10/28/2020 8:36 AMOnly 2 days out of the 21 that I didn't achieve my goals.. That's good right? Thank you to Blythe for inviting me to this challenge. It has created some additional mind shifts around my consumption of things. For those of you who are still curious around sustainability. Here are a few documentaries that provide a visual to our history on how we humans consume resources on our planet. I will leave their titles right here -> David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet (Netflix) & The Story of Stuff (Youtube or stoyrofstuff.org) Grab a kiddo and or a friend or loved one to watch them with you. You may find yourself wanting to debrief ;) - Much love to all... and thank you Mother Earth and all the farmers who have helped sustain my life here on Earth. -
Tracy Dana 10/19/2020 7:03 AMJust over the half way mark and I am so much more curious around how I see food and how its distributed. Here is an example... Costco vs Sprouts (local farmers market type grocer) I did a cost experiment. Bulk veggies in plastic bags from Costco (perceived bulk discount packaging) vs. placing my own veggies in a reusable bag and washing at home (I buy organic only). Result? 2.5 lbs. of squash from Costco wrapped in none recyclable plastic $6.99. Local grocer same product 2.5 lbs. = $4.51 ???? $2.48 savings and.... no plastic left behind. It's time to start getting more curious. More often.-
Stacy Strickland 10/21/2020 8:43 AMDon't you love that? I find that every so often, it is more expensive to buy organic and without packaging... yet most of the time, there is a cost savings that comes with the environmental/health savings :)

REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Work-Life BalanceHow might practicing work-life balance lead to a more sustainable life for yourself? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Tracy Dana 10/06/2020 3:27 PMMy daughter often talks about filling her bucket. I have often watched her do the little things that bring her joy. When school is over she can switch it off and plug into life. I fear that if I don't start practicing health work - life balance habits she will pick up the bad habits later in life that I am demonstrating now. So here to the daily 8 hour timer I will be setting and that conscious awareness that if I go over I will flex those hours from a different day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Tracy Dana 10/06/2020 3:23 PMMore meat = More carbon & more land usage to produce feed for animals. It's a cycle that is slowly stripping our earth of the nurturance in our soil. Only healthy soil can reclaim the carbon in the atmosphere. This will be a difficult challenge for me as It has been engrained in me from my parents that we MUST have meat in every meal. Cheers to dropping the meat and picking up a carrot! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Whole Foods DietMichael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this assertion?
Tracy Dana 10/06/2020 3:17 PMAs I get older I can recognize how food makes me feel. If I eat horribly? I feel horrible. Back in the 70's the US really pushed for processed foods to enhance our economy. With that production came a rise in health issues in the US. Diabetes, heart disease just to name a few. For the next 21 days I will consciously choose to pay the farmer for my health and well being not the health care industry. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?
Tracy Dana 10/06/2020 3:11 PMI made a shift to reduce my single use items years ago. Mainly plastic items.... Recently, I have noticed that my single use has shifted to things that are consumed from single use can's . Whether that be aluminum (soda water - beer ;) ) to tin cans from trader joes food items. I want to use this time to really re evaluate why I am choosing simplicity over mother earth. The reality is there are multi use options in these categories. I just need to lean in. Soooo? Here we go!
