Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Zero-Waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for using every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable (including the skins, tops, stalks, etc.) during your next meal prep?

I guess the important thing is to recognize that every part of the vegetable is edible (usually?) but might need to be cooked differently.

I've started saving the juice from some of these e.g. I love to buy large jars of artichoke hearts. The leftover juice is always useful somewhere else!

Make vinaigrette out of almost gone condiments in their containers.
Add oil and vinegar to the jars of condiments that are almost gone, but you can’t seem to get the last little bits out of.

I wish I had thought of that. I had an empty  bottle of salad dressing tonight with lots of good stuff in it still. I just washed the bottle and recycled it, but bemoaned the wasted dressing.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Nature Learn About the Impact of Old Refrigerants
Why are old refrigerant gases so harmful to our environment?

Refrigerant no longer destroys ozone but is a very potent greenhouse gas.

When you buy a new fridge from Home Depot they “haul away” your old one for $25. I wonder what happens to it? ....

NJ has a great recycling program - with $$ incentives. I don't know how COVID-19 affected it, but there's lots of info on https://www.njcleanenergy.com/recycling. Maybe rebate period was extended??
