Do at Home

Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Health

Exercise Daily

Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 15 minute(s) each day.

COMPLETED 4
DAILY ACTIONS

Water

5-Minute Showers

Do at Home

I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Water

Say No to Plastic Straws

Do at Home

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community

Reduce Single-Use Disposables

Do at Home

Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate. I will keep 3 container(s) out of the landfill each day.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community

Learn More about Food Apartheid

Do at Home

I will spend 15 minutes learning about food apartheid and find out how I can advocate for healthy and fresh food in my region.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community Reduce Single-Use Disposables
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted instead?

I regularly use plastic containers since WashU does a lot of carry out. I could substitute a travel bowl or travel plate. I could also more compost safe stuff.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

I think yoga, a very spiritual practice, is a great way to connect with friends. Before the pandemic, I also loved to go to cycling classes. That was a great way to connect with friends.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Healthy Sleep
Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?

I would like to go to sleep before midnight. I think getting a solid routine before bed, like reading, meditating, or even playing a mindless videogame, has been very helpful.

Why did I join this challenge? I joined this challenge for class but also because I think sustainability is something that we can easily incorporate into our daily lives. This is a good way to keep track of our progress. Since WashU changed to carryout, I've tried to keep in mind how much plastic I consume. I also would just like to educate myself more on sustainable issues.
