Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • This has been so fun and enlightening. Big thanks to my team for coming along for the ride! I hope some of the resources will still be available to browse through...they were great! Looking forward to the next EcoChallenge.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Research Impact Investing
How might impact investing help you better live your values?

Impact investing can give us reassurance that social, environmental and governance expectations are part of the screening process for fund managers, giving peace of mind that we are not inadvertently investing in companies with questionable practices or that run counter to our values on climate action and social justice. It's also a way of breaking down the divide between our pursuit of building personal wealth through investment and giving back through charitable giving. We can do both. It's a 2-in-1 win-win!
The dream would be that entities that do good for society can be as successful, mainstream and financially viable as traditional commercial, profit-driven entities. Not seen as a net cost (societal benefits notwithstanding), drawing only on the generous and government assistance.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Support Native Communities
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

It's only because of greed, superiority, entitlement and conquest that we took more than we needed, and ignored the needs of other life forms we share the planet with, that we have the environmental and social crises we are in now. If we'd listened and learned from Indigenous teachers 200 years ago there wouldn't even be a question of whether our lifestyles are sustainable now. Indigenous traditional ways of living on this planet had it right all along - balance, relationship, connectedness/oneness, nature and gratitude. Seems sad that so many of us are just learning this now and calling it "woke".

It's World Food Day! Let's all pick up one more action from the Food track and learn a little more about food systems, both local and around the world. For those involved in emergency food programs in Canada, the Government of Canada just announced this: https://pm.gc.ca/en/news/news-releases/2020/10/09/prime-minister-announces-additional-support-food-banks-and-local-food

  • Feeling very thankful today for the support and great efforts of our Team Headwaters teammates! I love watching the impact measures climb each time I check in. It’s a nice bump for the pride meter and some thing I look forward to every day! Thanks team, keep up the good work and tell all your friends. Let’s double in week 2!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Family Game Hour
How does being playful with others enrich your life?

Playing games brings laughter - always a pressure relief valve - and a different type of interaction that isn’t trying to accomplish anything, just fun. People can let loose and have a bit of friendly competition without anything heavy on the line. Cheering each other, calling out cheats, and learning to lose graciously builds bonds, confidence and trust.

Beyond the good lessons of structured games with rules, being playful is...just plain fun! Showing your goofy side is a family trait in my house, and compulsory.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Nature Go for a Daily Walk
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

I don’t have to leave my property for my daily walk - our trails are sort of a figure eight, with a few additional short cut connectors, making for many permutations of paths to take. We can usually get in about 1km without overlap. Giving thanks for that!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?

Headwaters Communities In Action 10/07/2020 10:21 AM
Taking one minute to practice gratitude each day is easy, and so helpful. I think I do it regularly, but it's good to make a point of it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Healthy Sleep
Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?

I admit this is a tough one for me, as a night owl, but I know it's important to get more sleep. I will set an intention daily to start my shut down routine a little earlier each night and ask for my spouse's help to encourage me to go to bed. I will also make my computer off-limits after 9pm.

  • So excited to start the People's EcoChallenge! Thanks for joining, team. I see so many great new actions this round.
Let's rack up some points!! Go Headwaters!
