Kelleigh's actions

Health

Healthy Sleep

Do at Home

Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 60 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.

COMPLETED 15
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Personal Waste Audit

Do at Home

I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Transportation

Drive Less

Do at Home

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips.

COMPLETED 11
DAILY ACTIONS

Health

Happiness

Do at Home

I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.

COMPLETED 16
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Skip the Straw

Do at Home

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

COMPLETED 12
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Prevent Recycling Contamination

Do at Home

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.

COMPLETED 5
DAILY ACTIONS

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Healthy Sleep
Consider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?

I get an average of 7.5 hours now instead of my 5-6 hour average. I can't say I feel much different because I have always been a night owl, and most of my classes happen during the early day. It's hard for me to go to bed before 4 am. Trying to go to bed before this in order to shift my sleeping schedule to sleep by 11 pm has been difficult, but taking melatonin has definitely helped me in trying to achieve this. I suppose a better update on this will come by the end of this challenge.

    Waste Personal Waste Audit
Why is it often difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places?

It is difficult to understand the impacts of our purchases because we don't really know what all we will be able to use since, in America, we tend to buy more than we really need because we plan on using it rather than collecting what we need the night before or the day of, and that can cause us to forget what all we've bought. Furthermore, it is hard to foresee the impacts the packaging and waste will have on things later down the line because there can be hidden plastics or foil-lined cardboard that isn't actually recyclable. It also attributes to the waste of food that could've been bought by someone that actually needed it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Prevent Recycling Contamination
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

I looked up the BottleDrop in Corvallis, OR. They accept bottles and other containers that come with the labelled deposit on the outside of the container; basically, anything that pours out of a container except It’s in a carton, foil pouch, drink box, or metal container that requires a tool to be opened. You obtain green bags from the BottleDrop facility itself, fill it up with the correct containers, and then bring it into the facility. For me, personally, the hardest part of the recycling is getting there as I do not have a personal vehicle.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

Shop local, only buy from companies trying to source their products more sustainably, buy preloved clothes when you can, bring your own straws to restaurants and other food places when you can, and recycle as much as you can.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Happiness
How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

Practicing gratitude keeps me motivated because I am able to see that I have things in life to look forward to even if they're little things or something someone else may not care about. I am grateful for the plants I've nurtured and the new leaves they grow when they've gathered enough water. I am thankful for the way my pet rats run up to their cage door when they see me walk into the room. I am thankful for being healthy and happy in a time when that's not an easy feat.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Drive Less
How has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

I mostly take the bus or walk because I enjoy seeing things I wouldn't usually see while driving. I also like meeting new people on the bus or while I'm waiting for the bus. I almost always carpool. I think living in Oregon my whole life, working on farms for horses, being a field hand for a few years, and camping all the time really helped me appreciate all that nature has to offer and all that we've taken for granted.
