I will spend at least 60 minutes finding out what local laws, policies, and practices keep people from voting in my community.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
Do at Home
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Energy
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
Do at Home
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Community
Engage In Active Listening
Do at Home
I will practice actively listening to a friend, family member, co-worker, acquaintance, or someone who I may disagree with in at least 10 conversations.
Waste
Reusable Cotton Rounds
Replace my use of cotton rounds (which I use daily) with resuable/washable ones. I've been meaning to do this anyway, but this challenge made me pull the trigger. I ordered them on Tuesday and used my first one tonight!
Health
Donate Blood
I think it is important for the health of the community to donate blood when we can. Especially now, during the pandemic, blood donations have decreased. I want to do my part to ensure community members can remain healthy as well.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Watch a Documentary about Racial Injustice
Do at Home
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about systemic racism.
Simplicity
Research Impact Investing
Do at Home
Using the links provided below, I will research impact investing and determine if it is right for me.

We may find more meaning and joy in life when our actions are aligned with our personal values. I will determine what my top 3-5 core values are so that I can better align my actions with them.

Install a Toilet Tank Bank
Do at Home
I will reduce the amount of water flushed and save up to 11 gallons (41 L) of water each day by installing a toilet tank bank.

I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Community
Research Restorative Justice
Do at Home
I will spend 60 minutes learning about restorative justice and conflict resolution opportunities in my own community or state.
Community
Support Native Communities
Do at Home
I will use the resource links provided and spend 60 minutes learning about the native populations that lived in my area prior to colonization, and what I can do to support those that still exist.
Energy
Replace Manual Thermostats
Do at Home
I will replace manual thermostats with programmable ones.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
Do at Home
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.

Do at Home
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Waste
Skip the Straw

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place -- your deep knowledge of and appreciation for your surroundings?
Mel Ratliff 10/27/2020 7:21 PMBeing in nature grounds me and helps with my mental health. I want to dig my toes into the ground, turn my face to the sun, and run my fingers through the air. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole Community Research Voter SuppressionWhat are the ways in which voters are prohibited from or discouraged from voting in your region and/or state? What could be done to get rid of these barriers?
Mel Ratliff 10/26/2020 7:21 PMI was struck by how close and well staffed early voting places are in Charlotte for more effluent areas compared to poorer areas, and Charlotte is pretty liberal. From a state point of view, I'm glad the voter ID law was struck down...the ways in which they systematical targeted which kinds of IDs did and did not count, and the hoops people would have to go through was enraging. Everyone should be given equal opportunities to vote. -
Mel Ratliff 10/19/2020 5:12 PMDonating blood and using my reusable straw! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Replace Manual ThermostatsHow do you anticipate replacing your thermostats for programmable ones will positively impact your life?
Mel Ratliff 10/19/2020 1:29 PMOut with the old and in with the new! Excited to get this replaced. I only have central heat so this comes at the perfect time of year. I like that I'll be able to program for the day and night - will help keep the house regulated without spikes. -
Mel Ratliff 10/17/2020 8:45 PMToday was great! Loved relearning to Swing dance, making my Halloween costume, and playing Bananagrams with my mom. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Core ValuesWhat are your top 3-5 core values? How did you narrow it down to those as being your core values?
Mel Ratliff 10/12/2020 9:05 PMLove. Laughter. Passion. Creativity. I always come back to these and I want more of all of them in my life. -
Mel Ratliff 10/12/2020 11:01 AMOk, ignore how gross the tank looks (I'm in a rental). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing and Renewal Family Game HourHow does being playful with others enrich your life?

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Research Restorative JusticeHow can Restorative Justice help foster the well-being of both people and planet?
Mel Ratliff 10/08/2020 8:01 PMAs just one example: Removing often harsh punishments for petty crime could keep countless people out of jail. This in turn would open up innumerable job opportunities for them (think about all the career choices that vanish if you have a criminal record), as well as allow them the right to vote (look at Florida's ridiculous system of allowing people to vote even after they have done their time). We can see right now how important it is to have every voice heard and counted in the upcoming US election. Policies that directly impact everyday people and efforts to protect out planet are on the line. A little forgiveness early on in the cycle could have a drastic impact that ultimately effects everyone. -
