Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Water
Eco-Friendly Gardening
Do at Home
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Waste
Research Local Waste Sites
Do at Home
I will spend 20 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
Do at Home
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus to reduce pollution in the environment and in local communities.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
Do at Home
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
Do at Home
I will find out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in recycling dumpsters or my curbside bin.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Do at Home
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate. I will keep 1 container(s) out of the landfill each day.
Transportation
Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
Do at Home
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching and weighing my options to see if a hybrid or electric vehicle makes sense for my lifestyle.
Nature
Plant Trees
Do at Home
I will plant 2 tree(s) in my community, public parks, or backyard.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
Do at Home
I will replace 4 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
Do at Home
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 2 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
Do at Home
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper per day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided when I have to print documents.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Do at Home
I will keep 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors, including market demand for recyclables. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
SCOTT BARANOWSKI 10/28/2020 7:45 AMOur county has local full-service and self-service recycling centers that are available for residents to use. I found one of each near my home. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric VehicleReducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?
SCOTT BARANOWSKI 10/27/2020 6:21 PMImage not needing to stop and put money into a fuel dispenser to fill up your car. This will avoid breathing the vapors of fuel and may prevent you from the urge of going into the store to purchase something! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
SCOTT BARANOWSKI 10/27/2020 6:20 PMCarry reusable bags in your vehicle and other places to remind you for their use as needed. I always carry some in my backpack for work for use. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Plant TreesHow is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?
SCOTT BARANOWSKI 10/26/2020 1:25 PMPlanting trees improves the appearance, gives us the ability to see growth and change over time thus proving greater satisfaction. The trimming needed over time provides physical exercise. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Choose LED BulbsSwitching out your lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
SCOTT BARANOWSKI 10/26/2020 1:10 PMMotion sensing lights on exteriors of buildings are excellent methods to reducing your impact as applicable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it often difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places?
SCOTT BARANOWSKI 10/22/2020 3:17 PMThink about the waste you may produce from your purchase. Consider skipping the bag or evaluate options to reduce packaging. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Eco-Friendly GardeningWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
SCOTT BARANOWSKI 10/21/2020 1:45 PMPlanting drought tolerant and native species is an excellent method to reduce water resources. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Advocate For More Food Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
SCOTT BARANOWSKI 10/20/2020 9:22 AMLandfill space is not infinite. We all need to find more ways to reduce and eliminate food packing options. -
