Grace's actions
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
Do at Home
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus to reduce pollution in the environment and in local communities.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
Do at Home
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Waste
Use a Reusable Mug
Do at Home
I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
Do at Home
I will keep 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Do at Home
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Grace Boerema 10/28/2020 8:39 AMThe only place I buy coffee is at McDonalds if I'm on the road. With Covid-19 no one is accepting your personal mug at this time. Definitely making a lot more coffee at home and just washing out my favorite mug. I'm a big coffee drinker so this is huge!-
Courtney Groszhans 10/28/2020 5:06 PMI have faced the same issue when I go to Starbucks, as due to COVID I have not used my reusable cup. I have made more iced coffees at home though!

Grace Boerema 10/28/2020 8:37 AMGood - I haven't been good about noting all the contributions but have been faithful to the cause!-
Courtney Groszhans 10/28/2020 5:07 PMThat is still great!

Grace Boerema 10/12/2020 10:01 AMGood! I like to try and be conservation minded everyday and remind others to do the same.-
Courtney Groszhans 10/13/2020 2:43 PMI have been doing the Needs vs. Wants challenge, I really found that I buy more things each day then I was previously aware of!

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Grace Boerema 10/12/2020 10:01 AMOption is take cart to the car and unload, use my purse or just carry the items out. Last option is a paper bag and I will recycle that.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?
Grace Boerema 10/12/2020 9:59 AMI'm educating friends on using reusable containers vs buying cases of water bottles at Costco. A friend who was displaced due to the Creek Fire is now using the 5 gallon refillable bottles (not single water bottles for each person in the family) since the water plant is not working currently. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
