Take Control
Do at Home
Both systemic and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.

If buying a plane ticket, I will also buy a carbon offset.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Healing and Renewal Core ValuesWhat are your top 3-5 core values? How did you narrow it down to those as being your core values?
Maryl Fisher 10/27/2020 3:03 PMOne of my core values is Learning and participating in the EcoChallenge has helped me to foster that value. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Take ControlHow do environmental health, community health, and your personal health intersect?
Maryl Fisher 10/22/2020 10:14 AMLiving in Idaho there is such a focus on outdoor recreation which helps motivate me to bike ride, cross country ski, and hike. These outdoor activities improve not only my physical fitness but boost my mood and feelings of wellbeing. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhy do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?
Maryl Fisher 10/22/2020 10:10 AMThe American food culture has become dominated by convenience rather than nutrition or sustainable agriculture. Take a look at the typical fast food menu and most choices are meat based - burger, taco, chicken nuggets. If we try to focus on eating locally grown foods we can support our community and reduce pollution. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole Community Learn About Local Environmental Justice ConcernsWho is most affected by environmental degradation and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Maryl Fisher 10/22/2020 10:04 AMOur area is susceptible to drought which impacts farming and food production. This in turn impacts those who depend on this work for their livelihood and the entire community. I liked this quote from one of the articles I read “helping the most vulnerable communities equates to helping everyone— slowing the spread of disease everywhere.”

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole Community Watch a Documentary about Racial InjusticeWhat did you learn about racial injustice in the documentary(ies) you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of sustainability?
Maryl Fisher 10/11/2020 8:08 PMI watched the documentary “13” about the 13th amendment. Was eye opening to hear the perspectives of historians and social justice leaders. Of particular impact was the discussion on the increase in mass incarcerations beginning from the 1970s.
