Last weekend I watched a documentary about the water problems in Flint, Michigan. Politics and greed of a few elected officials turned the lives of people living near one of the world's largest sources of water (Lake Huron) to a nightmare. Children were exposed to lead poisoning, water quality was unbelievably bad and elected officials were claiming that the water was confirming to standards and not willing to admit anything was wrong. Reminds us of the importance of participating in the elections where actions of elected officials affect our everyday life in good and hurtful ways.

Who is affected by polluted water or a lack of access to water in your region? How are they affected?

Clean water which is taken for granted in developed countries is still inaccessible to a lot of people. There are a lot of places in India where people will have to walk a few kilometers to get relatively potable water, and will have to keep them for a few hours for the sediments to settle before the water can be used.

Not just potable water, but water for showering is also scarce in developing countries. Most people in developing countries use 5 to 6 gallons for a shower, whereas the average consumption for a 10 minute shower is around 25 gallons (and more for the new body showers) in developed countries.

Let's try to save some water if we can, by using low-flow showerheads and by reducing the shower time a little.

I used to get groceries in disposable plastic bags, and I have bought a few reusable bags now.

Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

Meat is a lot cheaper and more industrialized in richer countries, whereas it's relatively expensive in other countries. I remember people used to eat meat once a week when I was growing up in India, and meat was local and fresh (never refrigerated/frozen).

Industrializing meat production increases the rate of pollution, and  centralized meat processing increases the risk of meat contamination.

Pugal, you're absolutely right! Meat has long been considered a luxury item and as wealth increases so does its demand. The meat industry has become a large contributor of greenhouse emissions and pollution. Its massive scale has increased the use of fillers in the feed, hormones given to the animal, and played a big part in shaping the agricultural landscape. So many reasons to reduce animal consumption! Great global insight on this topic, keep it up!!! :)
