Kevin's actions
Energy
Use an Energy Meter
Do at Home
I will use an energy meter to monitor my energy use and identify opportunities to save power.
Food
Homemade burritos
I will make homemade burritos rather eat frozen. Normally, I eat at least one burrito everyday. I choose it to teach myself how rewarding it will be for myself as well as the world if I make them myself.
Energy
Turn It Off
Do at Home
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
Do at Home
I will take a 45-minute walk outside each day.
Community
Host a Watch Party
Do at Home
I will host a watch party to screen a documentary about an issue that matters to me.

Kevin Relyea 10/28/2020 1:52 PMOverall, it was a good experience for me. It took me a little while to get going especially with the family and there is still work to be done with getting the kids to turn off lights when they leave a room, but I believe it was a positive experience for them as well. I also got into a good routine of making bean croquettes that I hope to sustain after the challenge. I also enjoyed getting outside as much as possible and watching Kiss the Ground (highly recommend).-
Courtney Groszhans 10/28/2020 4:57 PMThank you, Kevin! You did a great job! Thank you for the Netflix recommendation, I think another person watched that documentary too. I watched the trailer for it, it looks really good! Another documentary about farming that I really enjoyed is called "The Biggest Little Farm". It is about a couple who bought an old farm and through organic practices and traditional farming, made a beautiful, sustainable farm, I highly recommend.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn It OffHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Kevin Relyea 10/27/2020 9:51 AMGood question. I am not entirely sure. We signed up for our electricity to be sourced from renewable sources. This is a small action, but it is something that will help. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Host a Watch PartyWhat did you learn about in the documentary you watched? How did it make you feel?
Kevin Relyea 10/27/2020 9:49 AMI learned that the way we farm is incorrect and doomed to fail on a large scale. It also gives me hope that there is solution to climate change that can be significantly impactful. I recommend everyone watch 'Kiss the Ground.'-
Becky Whitlock 10/27/2020 10:43 AMIt was SOOOOOOOO good... We actually have a farm in South Dakota that we lease and we immediately called to find out if they were tilling!!

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Kevin Relyea 10/27/2020 9:48 AMMy walking is primarily while playing disc golf. Usually, I go first thing in the morning, so there are not many people around, which works for me. It gives me good perspective on the day. This past month has been incredible watching the leaves change color; such vibrant colors especially in the morning sun. -
Kevin Relyea 10/27/2020 9:43 AMWe watched 'Kiss the Ground' last night with the family. All enjoyed it and gave us hope for the future. I highly recommend watching it. Otherwise, family is on track to beat our electric use goals. Also, made another batch - this time pinto bean croquettes, so all set for the rest of the challenge. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Use an Energy MeterHow can you make your home more energy efficient?
Kevin Relyea 10/23/2020 1:24 PMRight now, it is still getting the family to turn off the lights when they leave a room. This EcoChallenge has been nice because it has allowed us to be positive when someone leaves a light on. We have set a goal as a family to lower our electricity use each week. The other behavior change is to hang clothes to dry instead of using the dryer. The major financial improvement will be replacing our windows. -
Kevin Relyea 10/19/2020 12:24 PMIt's my birthday, so I took the day off. Played 38 holes of disc golf at a new course. Shot +33 which is not bad considering it was my first time playing here. Also, loving my black bean croquette burritos. -
Kevin Relyea 10/18/2020 11:41 AMI made black bean croquettes. Now it will be easy to not eat frozen burritoes. I also ate up all my frozen stockpile which will also make it easy to met this daily goal. -
Kevin Relyea 10/14/2020 6:29 AMThe family met its weekly goal of using less electrical energy than last week (83 kWh compared to 92). The kids have been going out and reading the meter, and we created our own internal chart to track.
I haven't met my burrito challenge (eat no frozen burritos), but will make some black bean croquettes this weekend and then it should be much easier to achieve. -
Kevin Relyea 10/09/2020 1:07 PMGood start to the EcoChallenge. My family is collective trying to beat the electric energy we used last week (92 kWh). We only used 10 kWh on day 1 - having no power for eight hours really helped. Used more than we should on day 2 (20 kWh), which I think is attributable to the dryer; need to hang dry when we can. Kids made a chart to help us visualize our progress.
