Kayla's actions
Community
Talk To My Friends and Colleagues
Do at Home
I will research the social or environmental issues in my community that matter to me and tell 5 friends and/or colleagues each day about what I learn.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
Do at Home
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Transportation
Stay on the Ground
Do at Home
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Carry my Trash
Do at Home
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Offset for Climate Justice
Do at Home
Greenhouse gases found in old refrigerants are up to 10,900 times more potent than carbon dioxide. I will help eliminate these gases through the purchase of offset credits to ensure we all have a planet we can thrive on.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
Do at Home
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Community
Meet My Neighbors
Do at Home
I will meet 5 new neighbor(s) each day.
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community
Support Businesses Owned by People of Color
Do at Home
Racial inequity is both a sustainability and justice problem. I will support businesses owned by people of color in my community whenever I shop.

REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Justice for the Whole Community Support Businesses Owned by People of ColorA recent Keen Independent Research Foundation study found that Minority Businesses Enterprises (MBEs) are more likely to have difficulties in receiving loans or city contracts. In what ways can you work to address systemic racism like that demonstrated in this study?

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Talk To My Friends and ColleaguesWhat makes you feel connected to your neighborhood, your neighbors, or another kind of community in your life?
Kayla Sherwood 10/14/2020 7:28 AMgoing out of my way to meet new people that move into houses near me, I introduce myself and the connecting and bond will grow with time -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reusable one with you or aren't allowed to use the one you brought? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to create a successful habit of not using plastic bags?
Kayla Sherwood 10/13/2020 2:28 PMwhen I am in the grocery store is the most common area, but I just plan ahead and always have reusable bag in all of my vehicles so I do not have a reason to not use them!-
Keri Price 10/15/2020 7:24 PMI used to forget my reusable bags in my car when I went to the store. I would tell the cashier that I would bag it myself in the parking lot. It was a great idea until it hit over 118 degrees one day, I did not forget after that time.
