  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Community Learn About Trans, Femme, and Nonbinary Experiences
How is equality for trans, femme, and nonbinary people important to a just and sustainable society?

I always feel a little odd answering a question like this specifically for one group; it's hard I think to talk about justice for one group when everyone is oppressed in the US, and that's furthered by the fact that every systemic issue we have (wealth inequality, climate collapse, criminal justice, etc.) impacts marginalized groups more directly across the board.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

I started running outside recently which gives a chance to spend time in nature and have also been hiking a lot more.  It's tough spending so much time at home due to Covid so it's good to spend time outside as much as possible.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

We are past the point of no return when it comes to climate change, we can only mitigate the impacts but we need the political will to do so.  The more people that act locally to improve the planet, the bigger the impact will be globally so I try to do my part as much as possible in my community.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community Watch a Documentary about Racial Injustice
What did you learn about racial injustice in the documentary(ies) you watched? How does what you learned connect to your understanding of sustainability?

I learned about how messed up the criminal justice system is in this country and how targeted black people are because of policy that was put in place decades ago.  This is related to environmental justice issues where we see black people who are disproportionately impacted by pollution and other environmental issues.  The deck is stacked against them in many ways.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Help Others
In your opinion, how do social inequalities diminish a strong sense of community?

I think it’s a complicated question. I live on a street that is very diverse economically as well as racially, and I feel that we have a pretty strong sense of community in a sense. We all complain about each other, but when something happens, we all come together to help.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Healing and Renewal Nurture Self-Compassion
How can nurturing your Self-Compassion also nurture healthier relationships with others and the environment?

I think I’ve become more forgiving all around, and hopefully I will continue to go further. I think it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the climate crisis, and therefore harder to see accomplishments that are happening. While doing that, you kinda forgot how some environmental accomplishments are huge. So I think by nurturing self compassion, it will translate into feeling more nurturing towards nature.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Less Screen Time
What did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?

Admittedly I cheated a bit here, as sometimes I considered this activity being accomplished as I was exercising. That said, I did purposefully try to get 20 minutes a day, either through reading (not on a screen!), play games with the kids, or other outdoor activities. It's hard to do...looking at your screen is so automatic nowadays, that it really takes thought to not just reach into your pocket to scroll Twitter
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water 5-Minute Showers
Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

    Andy Behr's avatar
    Andy Behr 10/28/2020 9:52 AM
Its always easier for me to think locally, as I grew up in the Chesapeake watershed, so I've been careful about dumping anything (turpentine in art classes or oil from car maintenance) down drains.  To me, I think the biggest thing you can do is assume anything will ultimately get back into the water system. If you keep this in mind, it makes it easier to see your impact
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Whole Foods Diet
Michael Pollan states that “it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor.” What are your thoughts on this assertion?

I can tell when I am eating well because I feel well.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
Why do people in richer countries eat more meat than people in other places? How does eating more meat affect our planet and other people?

    Melissa Eusden's avatar
    Melissa Eusden 10/26/2020 5:06 AM
Richer countries have more access to cheap meat because the farm industry is highly subsidized.  The more meat, especially from cows, increases the methane in the atmosphere which is a more potent greenhouse gas than CO2 causing more climate change impacts.
