    Community Express My Support
What sustainability issues are most pressing or prominent where you live?

I would think recycling is one of the more prevalent issues of sustainability in my area.  I live in a small city area.  Recycling occurs, it is curbside pickup by the waste hauler.  It is combined recycling all in one bin.  The issue is properly identifying what is recyclable and what is not.  There are not enough resources or education on what is recyclable for the masses, so a lot of people are either not recycling what they could be, or putting items in recycling that are not.  I am often still confused about what can go into recycling.  Searching online was difficult because there does not seem to be a definitive listing in my area by municipality or by waste hauler.  More emphasis on this is really needed, especially now with foreign countries not taking our U.S. waste for recycling.  The U.S. needs to develop a better internal recycling system that covers the gamut of waste we are producing.

In the city of Portland, Oregon you can sign up to take recycling classes, where you become a "Master Recycler" or something along those lines. It goes through the whole waste system, what can and cannot be recycled along with the composting facility. Do you know if you city has a similar program?

Action Track: Justice for the Whole Community Learn More about Food Apartheid
What can lack of access to nutritious food affect a community? How can having access to nutritious food help a community become more resilient?

Everyone should have access to nutritious food.  I have felt for a long time as I stated in other Reflection Questions on here, it is shameful in my opinion that healthy, organic, and nutritious foods often times cost double OR MORE than junk food in the grocery stores.  There is no wonder that often lower income residents in communities often suffer with health conditions such as diabetes and others when it is more affordable to buy your family less nutritious foods filled with additives and preservatives.  A community can become more resilient to health concerns in general if healthier food options would be available and affordable to them.

Overall, it was a good experience for me. It took me a little while to get going especially with the family and there is still work to be done with getting the kids to turn off lights when they leave a room, but I believe it was a positive experience for them as well. I also got into a good routine of making bean croquettes that I hope to sustain after the challenge. I also enjoyed getting outside as much as possible and watching Kiss the Ground (highly recommend).

Thank you, Kevin! You did a great job! Thank you for the Netflix recommendation, I think another person watched that documentary too. I watched the trailer for it, it looks really good! Another documentary about farming that I really enjoyed is called "The Biggest Little Farm". It is about a couple who bought an old farm and through organic practices and traditional farming, made a beautiful, sustainable farm, I highly recommend.

    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four in the US spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

I'm not surprised that a lot of food gets thrown out, but the number here (240 lbs/year, which is about 4.6 lbs/week/person) is more than I expected. I already try to minimize the amount of food I waste, and the money I save goes towards any number of things that make me happy (like buying fancy ingredients to try new recipes).

Action Track: Healing and Renewal Core Values
What are your top 3-5 core values? How did you narrow it down to those as being your core values?

My top 5 values are: Compassion, Freedom,  Enjoyment and Integrity. I narrowed these down as areas that are important to my life. I tried to think of things that resonate to me and the person I want to be. I will try my level best to live life through these values.

holistic health goes beyond me and my doctor.  creating a healthy home, healthy neighbourhood and strong governance for our city and its resources is a very important way that I like to build the scaffolding for my life.

    Nature Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
Father Thomas Berry says, "... our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." What is your response to Berry's assertion?

    Fatema Adamji 10/28/2020 11:06 AM
I agree with Berry because I often hear people saying that it is a new day. Every day is an opportunity to make change and reminds us that time passes even if we are at a standstill. An interesting way to see the bigger picture, if you will.

I struggled to enjoy the sunsets this time around. I think it is because it's starting to get dark earlier and I am usually still working!
